Things to know about finances at CUA

  • The Office of Student Financial Assistance can help you obtain Federal Direct Loans, Graduate Plus Loans, as well as Private Commercial Loans
  • Graduate scholarships, teaching assistantships, and stipend decisions are made by the graduate school in which you are enrolled
  • Graduate scholarships, teaching assistantships, and stipends will appear in Cardinal Station when the Office of Student Financial Assistance has been notified by your Graduate School.

Financial Aid and Tuition Bill

  • Awards must be accepted or declined online in Cardinal Station
  • Funds from CUA scholarships and grants are credited to the student's account at the beginning of the fall, spring, or summer semester
  • The Office of Student Financial Assistance should be notified as soon as possible of any reductions a student wishes to make to loan amounts.
  • Refunds for students with federal student aid credit balances are processed within 14 days of date the credit balance was created, per federal regulation. Additional refund information can be found at Enrollment Services

Application Process for Federal Financial Aid 

  • If you wish to receive federal aid you need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at
  • When Financial Aid receives your FAFSA, your aid eligibility will be packaged and appear in Cardinal Station
  • An award letter will be mailed to the home address we have on file for you. You are responsible for making sure your address is correct.

 How Loans Are Credited to Your Account

  • Federal Direct Loan funds are transferred electronically to your CUA account
  • Most commercial loans are completed electronically however, if you have a Commerical Loan that utilizes paper check, you must visit the Enrollment Services and endorse the check from your lender
  • If you have a Perkins Loan, it is credited to your account electronically after you sign the master promissory note online with our loan servicer UAS at

Work-study is not automatically awarded to graduate students

  • If you are interested in a work study position contact The Office of Student Financial Assistance for a determination of eligibility
  • Work-study is based on the financial information on your FAFSA  
  • Work-study funds are paid directly to the student through work-study employment. They are never applied to the student's bill.
  • Graduates can work on campus or in the community service programs DC Reads or Jumpstart
  • Any available jobs are listed in the Office of Career Services in 102 McMahon Hall and on the Career Services Website.
